Description
This emblematic building, located in Plaza Independencia at Plaza Independencia 848, is a historical example of the region's architecture.
Designed by Italian architect Mario Palanti and erected in 1928, Palacio Salvo stood as the tallest building in South America at its time. Its architectural style combines neo-romantic and neo-Gothic elements, leaving a lasting impression on the urban skyline and on the history of Montevideo.
Inside the Salvo Palace is the La Cumparsita Tango Museum. It occupies the site where the La Giralda confectionery was. There the historic song "La Cumparsita" was composed. This iconic piece of music is considered one of the hymns of Uruguayan tango. Composed in 1916 by Gerardo Matos Rodríguez, a young Uruguayan student, "La Cumparsita" became a cultural and musical phenomenon that transcended borders. Its soulful melody and rhythmic beat have captivated listeners around the world, and its legacy lives on in the rich tradition of tango.
